Whenever you are charged with a crime, you have two main options:
1. Accept a plea deal
2. Go to trial
A plea deal is a bargain – we agree you will plead guilty to something in exchange for something we want. That could mean pleading guilty in exchange for a reduction of what you are charged with (a felony reduced to a misdemeanor, or a misdemeanor reduced to a violation-level offense) or to ensure a particular sentence. An example of a bargained for sentence would be probation instead of jail-time, or less time in jail than is usually given for a particular crime.
Even though pleading guilty sounds like a bad thing, it is something worth considering if we can bargain for the best possible outcome in your case in doing so. The decision to take a plea deal or go to trial is always up to you as the defendant, but I will be here to advise you on what I think is best.
